What exactly is a “push” present?
A push present is given to women after they have birthed or “pushed out” the baby. A gift is given to the new mom in recognition of how much they have endured over the past nine months and also to commemorate their entry into motherhood. The gift can be given in the labour room, just before or after the birth, and whilst all mothers will say their baby is a priceless gift, some partners will want to go that extra mile to show their appreciation, and a push present may be the perfect way to do so.
When did push presents start?
Push presents got traction in the early 1990s but it’s said that the idea behind it started in India and has been around for potentially hundreds of years. A new mother would be showered with gifts in a ritual called ‘Godh Bharai’ where the mother gets blessed with the joys of motherhood. She will be showered with jewellery and gifts and presented with fruits and sweets.
